The Results of a Dream
By Jim Heiting, Chair, Inland Empire Champions of Collaborative Courts
The Ruck Challenge was the result of the dreams of our IEC3 advisory board members, Riverside Veterans’ Court judge, Mark Johnson. His concept brought several of us together to put this on, with the IEC3 as the sponsoring and initiating body.
Judge Johnson continued to spearhead the efforts, along with Alberto Recalde, Deputy District Attorney assigned to the Veterans’ Court, Utilizing their great contacts with law enforcement and the veterans’ community. The Ruck Challenge was a competition among 4-person teams, with each person carrying a 50 pound “ruck sack” (35 pounds for women) over a course that encompassed a variety of surfaces and topography for about 6 miles.
Funds for this year’s event are dedicated to our Veterans’ Courts in the Inland Empire. A core group has been very dedicated to organization and realization of this effort and it is already a great success. We are extremely grateful to them for their generosity of spirit and time. I am sure we can provide information and outlines as to how to duplicate the effort in other areas.
The Inland Empire Champions of Collaborative Courts will decide whether or not this event will happen again next year. We will also take a look at what collaborative courts in Riverside and San Bernardino counties may benefit from this robust fund raiser. With all of the interest, I believe this will be an annual event (that will grow and grow)! We received direct contributions as well as team and individual entry fees. Teams included groups of lawyers, groups of judges, groups of SWAT and other law enforcement, active military, and others. Donors included law enforcement and professional associations.
